Oak Ridges Moraine

Purple Woods Conservation Area and Heritage Hall sit on top of the Oak Ridges Moraine, a unique landscape feature resulting from melting glaciers that retreated to the north and south about 10,000 years ago.  What was left behind was a spoil of sands, gravels and boulders that form the headwaters of 65 river systems across the Greater Toronto Area.  This property provides an important ecological connection to natural areas east and west as well as north to Lake Scugog and south to Lake Ontario.  Here in Oshawa, the Oak Ridges Moraine is squeezed into a narrow band, making our efforts to protect existing forest cover and add to it through our watershed management, land acquisition and education and stewardship programs, a high priority.
